On 28th June, Tbay visited the Akropong School for the Blind, the school located in the heart of Ghana, standing as a beacon of hope for visually impaired students. This is the 40th school we donated, our "Donating 1,000 Schools Program" was going well and impressed on our memory.
School Background
The Akropong School for the Blind is a government-supported school that was established in 1945. It was the first school for the blind in West Africa. The school began with only two pupils with special needs, and over the years, the number of pupils has grown to hundreds and the school now caters for pupils from kindergarten to junior high school. This institution has been dedicated to nurturing and educating visually impaired students, providing them with the tools they need to succeed in a sighted world.
The school has infrastructures such as classrooms, boarding facilities, dining hall, assembly hall, sickbay, etc. It also has a vocational training center, the music unit and adult rehabilitation class. The pupils are very calm, friendly and sociable, and they support each other in their movements.
Why We Select This School
This school was chosen because of their special needs as disabled pupils (blind) and also, normally we neglect the disabled people in our societies. Moreover, it’s in line with the vision of Tbay. Many pupils are from deprived homes who don’t have access to teaching and learning materials, which make studying difficult for them. Thus, we sought to provide essential items that enhance the students' daily needs and life.
Donation Process
Considering students’special needs, we thoughtfully provided various products for them, including braille sheet, white canes, braille books, etc. Among those items, Braille Sheets and braille books play a pivotal role in helping blind students access written information, empowering them to read and learn independently.
Additionally, we also offer a wide range of daily living essentials, including soft drinks , bottle water, dustbin, biscuits, toilet–roll, bag of rice, crate of milo, crate of milk, sanitary pad, tissue, cooking oil, Dettol antiseptic liquid, box of sardine, sweeping brush, detergents, mops, mop buckets, napkins, plastic cups, plastic bowl, etc.
Then Gideon Dogyi, the assistant headmaster, welcomed us and received the items on behalf of the school and further thanked the association for the kindness. He told us a brief history of the school. He said that the Akropong School was the first school for the blind in West Africa, and over the decades, the school has groomed students to become talents in the societies. Most pupils are employed in various sectors such as teachers, lawyers, radio/ TV presenters after graduation. The school also runs a program for pupils who become blind late in life, and they are also provided with a rehabilitation unit.
We had some interviews with the students. One of them is called Sellas Ofos. He said,“I want to thank Tbay for the items and hope their generosity continues for the students. Our talents also like singing, playing instruments, and acting, but often go unnoticed due to challenges and prejudices. I hope Tbay and the public will involve us in future programs."
Another student called Ruth said, “ I’m really grateful to Tbay. May God bless Tbay. I also want TBAY to provide us with electronic devices such as laptops to enable us to catch up with modern ways of learning.”
Conclusion
Through this donation, we hope those students can have equal access to education, ensuring that every individual, regardless of their visual impairment, has the opportunity to thrive academically and personally.
We also empowered them to navigate their educational journey with enhanced independence and confidence. Tbay will keep continuing our charity events and inspiring others.
