Cheap Gift Cards and Fake Prizes: Common Scams Targeting Gift Card Traders in Nigeria

Last updated: October 05,2026

Scammers often lure gift card traders with the promise of easy profit by offering cheap gift cards to resell, "task" jobs that pay commission, or fake prizes that need a card code to claim.

These scams look different on the surface, but they all use the same bait: the promise of money for very little effort. Once you know the pattern, every version of it becomes easy to spot.

1. The Fake "Cheap Card" Resale Deal

This scam offers you a gift card at a low price from a private seller, with the promise that you can resell it to Tbay for a profit.

The problem: these cards are often stolen or invalid, so you end up paying real money for a code that's worthless. There's also no guarantee built into this setup — the "seller" isn't verified, and once they're paid, they have no reason to stay reachable.

Tbay does not sell gift cards and does not guarantee resale profits on cards bought from third parties. If someone is offering you a "deal" like this, it has nothing to do with us, and buying from them puts your money at risk, not theirs.

2. The "Buy First, Earn Commission" Task Job

A common version of this scam is framed as a job or task opportunity: buy gift cards with your own money, then resell them for a commission. It's often marketed as a side hustle or "brushing" task.

Tbay has no affiliation with part-time job platforms, task sites, or any arrangement involving "buying cards first to earn a reward." If a job posting describes this as working with Tbay, it isn't us, and there's no guaranteed profit on the other end.

3. The Fake "Tbay Employee" Selling Cards

In this version, someone claims to be a Tbay employee and asks you to pay them to purchase a gift card.

This one is easy to catch once you remember the core rule: Tbay only buys gift cards. We never sell them, and we never ask customers to transfer money to purchase one. Anyone claiming to be our staff and asking for payment for a card is not conducting a real Tbay transaction, block them and don't send any money.

4. The Fake "Refund or Compensation" Fee

This scam usually follows after someone has already bought a card from a private, offline seller and something went wrong. A person then asks for an additional fee to process a "refund" or "compensation."

Tbay isn't the seller in offline private purchases, so there's no refund process on our end for that transaction to begin with. Sending more money to someone asking for a "fee to get your money back" only adds to the loss. If this happens, stop contact with that person immediately and don't send anything further.

5. The Fake Prize or Giveaway

The last version skips the "buy and resell" angle entirely and goes straight for a reward: a message saying you've won a prize or giveaway, and asking you to send your gift card code or PIN to claim it.

Real promotions and rewards from Tbay only ever appear inside your own account in the app — never through a code you're asked to send to someone else. If a "prize" requires you to hand over a card code first, it was never a prize to begin with.

What All Five Scams Have in Common

Every version above depends on convincing you that money can move hands outside the app: through a private seller, a side job, an employee, a refund fee, or a prize claim. None of that matches how Tbay actually works.

Tbay buys gift cards, only through the official app, and never sells cards, promises resale profits, or asks for a card code to release a reward. Once you know that one fact, every scam on this list collapses on its own.

FAQs

1. Does Tbay ever sell gift cards to users?

No. Tbay only buys gift cards from users. Any offer to sell you a card in our name is not legitimate.

2. Is there a real "buy cards and resell for commission" job with Tbay?

No. Tbay has no connection to part-time job platforms, task sites, or guaranteed-profit resale arrangements.

3. Do I need to pay a fee to receive a refund or compensation from Tbay?

No. Tbay does not sell cards privately, so there's no refund fee tied to private, offline purchases. Any request for a "fee" to release a refund is an extortion attempt.

4. Can I win a real prize by sending my gift card code somewhere?

No. Genuine rewards and promotions only ever show up directly inside your Tbay account — never through a code sent to claim them.
