Recently, we’ve noticed an alarming pattern of scammers impersonating Tbay vendors on Telegram. These fraudsters use our brand name and similar profile pictures to trick users into sharing gift card codes outside our official platforms. Here’s how one of our community members fell victim to this scam and how you can avoid it.
The Trap: Impersonating a Tbay Vendor
A gift card trader was active in a Telegram group when she saw a message from someone claiming to be a Tbay vendor. At first glance, the account looked convincing because of a display name and a profile picture similar to a legitimate Tbay vendor.
The message was straight forward "Sell your gift cards directly to me—instant payment!"
There were no elaborate promises. No fake "proof" of transactions. Just a direct offer to trade outside the TBay app.
How the Scam Unfolded?
The Approach
The scammer didn’t bother sending fake payment confirmations or screenshots. They simply relied on looking almost real enough to deceive.
The Request
After a brief chat, they insisted the trader share the gift card codes first, promising payment afterward.
The Disappearance
The moment the codes were sent, the scammer vanished after blocking the user and leaving them with no way to recover their funds.
